Salt, Gold, Steel and Ghosts (Spellbound Kingdoms)
The Axemen are named after King Jason II of Thyre’s actions when he gave his lover Siobhan a gold-and-hematite axe pendant, saying “Your love is like an axe to the frozen lake that was within me.” When his nobility conspired to assassinate him and undo the progress he was making in dismantling the estate of the nobles and lessening the oppression of the commoner, those who believed in his cause rioted. The Axemen are an insurrectionist, anti-monarchist, pro-inspiration revolution based in Thyre.
They have been wildly successful. Thyre burns, although it is not yet free. The Axemen’s War, as it has come to be called, is spreading from Kingdom to Kingdom across the Claw as the common people hear about the uprising against their oppressors and take up arms. They are well financed, well armed and surprisingly well organised, having more in common with a professional guerilla army than the rabble of revolutionaries they used to be.
They send cells of insurrectionists into other Kingdoms to spread unrest, gather support and eventually to start a rebellion. They have had mixed success – Dynni nobility make a habit of publicly burning anyone even suspected to have Axemen sympathies, but the fire is beginning to rise in Avedine, the Doomholds, Akra, Marnh and Azenahal. The nobility across the Claw are getting increasingly worried at the success they are having and the Kings are becoming increasingly unforgiving in their attempts at stamping out the growing rebellion.
